How to get involved with Gilgal
Are you an individual, business, or other group who would like to support Gilgal on a casual basis?
Cash donations
Monetary gifts are the number one way to support Gilgal Birmingham, allowing us to continue to offer our vital services.
The government covers less than 20% of our running costs through statutory funding, all of which is put towards our core costs; essential staff like our CEO and Finance Officer; our building; and our utilities like water, electricity, and gas.
All of the additional services that we provide – from activities for our residents, to IDVAs and ISVAs offering support both within the refuge and in the wider community – are completely funded by the generosity of our donors.
All the money donated to Gilgal helps change the lives of those experiencing domestic abuse.
Community fundraising
Community fundraising is a fantastic way to get involved in raising money to support our cause. It can be undertaken by an individual, a group of people such as parents, a church group, book club or choir, or a company, who might wish to hold a fundraising activity.
Fundraising ideas
If you are unsure of how you would like to fundraise, think about your own skills and what people might pay for, or sponsor you for. Do you have any baking or craft skills? Perhaps you want to challenge yourself to run a 5k, or do a sponsored kayak?
Alternatively, is there something your community could benefit from, such as a discounted clothing sale or an entertainment event?
There are many ways to raise and transfer funds – an easy one is LocalGiving!

Volunteering with Gilgal
Our volunteers bring expertise and skills, and offer diverse experiences and perspectives, which help us to build a well-rounded service where all feel welcome.
Do you, your group, or business have a skill to share? Professional services in areas such as finance, law, marketing, and construction can help us grow and improve our services.
Or maybe you have a hobby you would like to share with our residents as part of our activities programme – baking, arts and crafts, and fitness are just a few of the areas our women and children have expressed an interest in.
We are also always looking for volunteers in the Gilgal Charity Shop!
Working with Gilgal Birmingham has been so incredibly rewarding. I’ve enjoyed seeing the women’s confidence grow week on week; from being too nervous to put paint to paper, to creating exciting and beautiful works of art. It has been an honour to support them and see them discover new skills and talents.

Volunteer application process
Volunteering with us is also a great way to obtain work experience, particularly if you are a student, are new to the world of work, or are currently unemployed and looking for a new opportunity.
We can offer references to those who have volunteered with us, giving you a helping hand into employment. We also welcome volunteers who are retired or those who work part time.
Please be aware that at this time, Gilgal are only able to accept female volunteers, both in our refuge and in our charity shop. The Genuine Occupational Requirement (Schedule 9, Equality Act 2010) applies. If you feel you have expertise that could be shared with us remotely, please do get in touch and express this on your application.
